To our Reedley College students, coaches and families that participate in and support athletics –
The California Community College Athletic Association Board approved a three-scenario plan in early June designed to allow competition for the 2020-21 school year, contingent on local conditions related to COVID-19. These three scenarios include a Conventional Plan, which reduces the length of the season in order to end before Thanksgiving but otherwise keeps sports within their traditional season; a Contact/Non-Contact Plan that includes cross country, women’s golf, swim & dive, and women’s volleyball being offered in the fall on a similar schedule with all other sports pushed to the spring season; and a Contingency Plan which only provides for cross country and women’s golf in the fall with all others being offered in the spring.
Citing current statewide COVID-19 statistical trends and concerns over their ability to adequately protect student athletes and employees from the coronavirus as well as budget uncertainty related to COVID-19, the majority of schools in the Central Valley Conference have decided to suspend athletic competition for the fall 2020 semester. Reedley College, as a member of the Central Valley Conference in the California Community College Athletic Association, supports this decision but also supports continued non-contact training and education of our Fall 2020 student athletes. We hope that this coming year can be used to assure good academic standing and transfer preparedness of all of our Fall 2020 teams.
I want everyone to know that I have spent many hours speaking with people regarding this decision, looking at current data and information, while always holding the safety of our student athletes and our employees at the forefront of my analysis. This decision was not made lightly, and I want to reaffirm my support for our athletic programs here at Reedley College… we will be back in competition as soon as we can do so safely.
Sincerely,
Dr. Jerry L. Buckley
President
