Assessment Testing

Assessment Center: NOW LOCATED IN "STC-2" BUILDING, ROOM 1

All students entering Reedley College or the North Centers for the first time (or after a 3-year absence) must take a General Placement test prior to registration in order to be advised by a counselor.  This is part of the Matriculation process mandated by the State of California Community College Chancellor's Office, and an effective component of the "Multiple-Measures" counseling process as well.  The assessment test measures your skill level in 3 areas important to all academic undertakings:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Sentence Skills
  • Arithmetic, or Elementary Algebra, or College Level Math.

Students should view this as a measure of their skills in order to help a counselor and the student determine the best choice of classes to start their academic career.  You cannot pass or fail this test.  See the list below for important information about this test, and other services offered by the Assessment Center.

YOU MAY CHOOSE TO BE EXEMPT FROM THE MATRICULATION PROCESS.
PLEASE SEE A COUNSELOR FOR AN EXPLANATION (Download matriculation checklist here).

YOU MUST BRING PHOTO ID TO TEST SESSION.

APPLICATION SHOULD BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO TEST SESSION.

The General Placement test is taken on a computer in the Assessment Center, located in the Student Center 2 building in the center of campus.  Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins will be accommodated on a first-come, first-serve basis if space is available.  Large groups are asked to call well in advance to determine availability for specific time requested!

For a sample of the General Placement test check out the Yuba City College Assessment Center web site!  For test preparation, look at the Study Guide Zone for help with many different tests.
Here are some other websites to find assistance in preparing to take the Accuplacer placement test...

The Ability To Benefit (ATB) test is offered to those students who do not have a high school diploma, General Education Development (GED), or proficiency certificate and are planning to apply for Federal Financial Aid.  See the Financial Aid office first before taking this test.

The Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) is offered to those whose native language is not English, and are planning on taking one or more of the English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.  THIS TEST IS GIVEN IN ENGLISH ONLY, NO OTHER LANGUAGE FORMAT IS AVAILABLE.  YOU MUST BE ABLE TO READ ENGLISH TO TAKE THIS TEST.

The Noel-Levitz "College Student Inventory" is a survey of ones' attitudes and beliefs as they pertain to their academic goals.  The report from this survey helps the student see potential areas in their life that may have a negative influence on their academic efforts.  It is confidential, and is used by the student when they visit an instructor or counselor to help interpret the results.  This service is offered in the Assessment Center, or in a classroom if prior arrangements have been made with the instructor.

Students with disabilities are requested to visit DSP&S first for verification before accommodations in placement testing can be arranged.  The DSP&S office is in the DSP&S building in the center of campus.  Their telephone number is (559) 638-0332.

Distance education students who need a proctored environment for their tests should contact the Assessment center to make arrangements for this option.

All services provided by the Reedley College Assessment Center are free.

PLACEMENT TESTING ONLINE AT YOUR SCHOOL?

If you cannot make it to Reedley College to take the placement test, arrangements may be made with your High School or College counselor to take the placement test online at their location.  They must contact the Assessment Center to receive instructions regarding setup and access to the test.  The test must be taken in a proctored environment!  It may not be taken at home.  Contact Steve Jones for information on how to set this up via email, or by completing the Proctor Request form and returning it to the RC Assessment Center.
